I did a lot of research on cup holders for bikes before I bought this one. Unfortunately after my first use I was a disappointed. I rode to work and on the way stopped to get a small cup of coffee. With every "small" bump coffee splashed everywhere. I made sure the holder was installed properly but the cup kept moving. The holder expands but will not hold a large cup because the opening would then be too wide and the cup will fall out. I rated it as just ok because if I used a bottle of water it worked fine but I was really looking to use it for coffee like the picture depicts.I had looked on an off for quite a while to find a non-mug, cup holder for my bicycle for those hot afternoons when riding to the local coffee shop for a free frappacino just seems like a great idea. I decided to try the Delta Cycle Corp Bike Grande Beverage holder. @ $16 the price was OK, and I didn''t really find any negative comments in the reviews. Although I usually get Vente, not Grande, I didn''t really think the overall size was too different??? Although the cup holder is not removable which would be great, since I only use it occasionally, its functionality so far is better than expected. With a large 20 oz plastic cup I rode home on variable paved rodes with success (about a mile). I did take one sip before starting for home and another while riding after the first barrier maneuver and finally taking a very rough turn at 15 mph, slowing cause I became more aware of the jiggling bike, although there was no need. The cup didn''t move a bit, nor did any of the juicy nourishment come out around the straw. The unflexed plastic when not in use is about 2.5'''' in diameter. There are 2, 3/16" red anti friction type plastic dots that add to the stability. I have only used it twice so I can''t give any long term statistics about the ability of the plastic to retain its "flex memory". So far though it feels like the cup is on the coffee table at home, even though I am sipping the refreshing icy while still riding, bending to reach the tall straw for a drink.
Installation was easy as the clamp mount design is streamlined more than most and fit between the cyclometer and bell mounts. I remember reading reviews for other cup holders that slipped, so I was mindful to tighten with purpose, again without issue. I have the standard 1" bars so I used the included hybrid rubber spacer to take up the space. I guess there must be larger bars out there somewhere, but none of my bikes have that large a diameter.
So I rated a 4 because it just seems so aerodynamically small, but I will be pleasantly surprised if/when the plastic has the same performance after 100 miles... we will see!
