Basically a sponge cut to fit the bottle. Way more expensive than it needs to be. Use the original as a pattern and make your own.

Just purchased several of these bottles for a family trip to the Amazon and Pantanal regions of Brazil. Bottom Line: save your money. If you truly need a portable water filtration/purification system (which I found out I didn''t in Brazil as there was bottled water available everywhere) this is probably not the system for you. First it is very heavy. The mechanism is clumsy requiring you to unscrew the bottle, add water, rescrew the now full bottle, pump it a bit, open the valve with your teeth, quickly catch the water that spurts out, close the valve with your teeth (making it nearly impossible not to contaminate the valve), pump it some more, repeat the process for a little more water.

There are other filters out there, especially those that can be placed in-line on a Camelbak system that are lighter and much more effective and efficient.

i keep 2 extra sponges stuffed down in the bottom of my maxpedition water bottle bag ith the lifesaver bottle on top of them, they take up no space, they fit just like the one that came with the lifesaver and they add almost no weight, i recently used the lifesaver a few times when campking, the pre-filter disk that came with the bottle got very dirty so instead of trying to clean it off i just switched to another disk and put the original in a zippy bag, then shovbed it down in the bottom of the maxpedition case until i got home. cleaned up easily in the sink at home. everyone who has a lifesaver should have 1 or two of them.
