Cafe Cap

Cafe CapThis cap is a great addition to the Klean Kanteen bottles. I have several Klean Kanteen bottles, both insulated and non-insulated. You just need to understand that this cap is not meant to be a leak proof cap. (The packaging clearly states this, as does the Klean Kanteen website.) It''s a spill resistant cap. So no, you can''t throw your bottle in your backpack with this cap on it. But at the same time, you do no have to unscrew the cap when you want to take a drink. The cap is meant to be used when using your bottle at a desk/table, or when sitting at home, etc. Yes, it would be nice if Klean Kanteen also made a cap that met in the middle. A cap that was leak proof, but quick and easy to drink from. Like the sports cap they have for the classic bottles. Personally I hate sport caps, so I''m glad to have this cap as an option. And when used for for what it is designed for, it is a great cap. Just set your expectations correctly, and you will be pleased.

One reviewer saw the cleaning of this cap as a negative. I see it as a HUGE positive. You can quickly and easily pop it apart and clean it *thoroughly*. (And it is dishwasher safe.) The caps I''ve had in the past on all the different coffee tumblers and water bottles I have tried (and there have been many) had one or more places that were impossible to clean. Either a rubber gasket or some other spin top that you could not get under. I drink chai lattes. I hate to think of the bacteria that was able to grow in those nooks and crannies that I could not get into to wash all the milk out of. After I broke a ceramic tumbler I had from a certain ubiquitous coffee place, I ripped the gasket out of the cap out of curiosity... the gunk I saw in there made my stomach turn to think I had been drinking from that cup. I think the reviewer that commented on the cap getting dirty between the two parts simply miss the point that that happens on ALL coffee type caps of this type. But with most, you can''t take them apart and see the dirt, let alone clean it. So being out of sight, people do not realize the dirt that is there.

Overall, this is a 4.9 star cap. I do wish the opening was a touch bigger so I could "guzzle" water from it when I want. With it''s current design, I can only drink at a moderate rate. But I have found that the case with all cups/caps I have tried. (I think they are designed that way to prevent people from spilling on themselves if they tip the cup/bottle at too great an angle.) So when I want to do such, I simply take the cap off and guzzle away :)

One other comment... some reviewers have asked a question along the line of "why don''t they add a gasket to make it leak proof." I think the reason Klean Kateen does not make a leak proof cap like such as that is that they would need to use rubber (or such) in the gasket. The company is very much about using materials that are food safe. Also, those gaskets deteriorate over time and start to "flake". Then those small pieces get into your beverage. Based on marketing material on their website, I think Klean Kateen is all about safe, durable, and sustainable products & materials. And the material used for gaskets do not live up to that philosophy. I agree a leak proof cafe cap would be nice. But I would not one that has any questionable materials. So I''m willing to live with the minor inconvenience of switching caps.

The cap is made out of a BPA free plastic that does not affect the taste of what you are drinking. It is a cafe cap.. meaning a cap to mostly drink out of. It does not leak at all during normal use. It will leak slowly however if you have a sipping cap on it and hold it upside down. It''s a sipping cap. I use it in my office and taking drinks too and from work in my car''s cup holder or my hand or sitting upright in a bag. It works perfectly for all of these uses.

To clean it normally you can just rinse it out with warm soapy water or put it in the dishwasher. To give it a good spring cleaning you pop the top bit off of the other bit and wash them separately. They are designed to easily come apart and be put back together. I have had it two years now and was very satisfied with it. Apparently someone else was too because my klean kanteen was stolen at work, which is why I came here to immediately replace it.

At first I was disappointed to find that the cap is not leak proof, and that Klean Kanteen didn''t have a more sophisticated design for a sipper cap. Turns out they actually designed the most practical and healthy cap available. It''s true that the cap is not leak proof, but that''s the trade off for having a cleanable and long term use cap at this point. It''s designed to come apart for cleaning, which is not the case with the competing brands that have what appear to be excellent designed caps for leak proofing, but since they are not designed to be taken apart are nearly impossible to clean and use longterm with proper hygiene. Others that cannot be separated for cleaning will always eventually, some actually quite quickly (see related Amazon reviews), form bacteria in between the moving parts., leading to among others, foul smell and taste, and obviously not healthy. Yes, it''s plastic... but BPA free and recyclable at least. Until a non-plastic cap is manufactured, this is the most healthy and practical cap available, and has secured my continued patronage to Klean Kanteen.

I have Klean Kanteen''s 16-ounce insulated bottle so I bought this cap to go with it. It''s very convenient and it''s the cap I use all the time while at home or at the office. I find it indispensable.

But because the cafe cap is not leakproof, when I carry the bottle outside I have to put back the original cap that came with it. Because of this, I only gave it four stars. I know it''s possible to make a cafe-style cap that is leakproof because an inexpensive plastic water bottle I bought at the drugstore a few weeks ago has one. A hinged tab on the cap lifts up to take a sip and snaps back down. There is a gasket on the underside of the tab that makes it waterproof. So it can be done.

As for cleaning the cafe cap, it''s a little inconvenient but it''s pretty easy to pop off the rotating disk that covers the drinking hole. From the underside/inside of the cap, just squeeze the little post in the center while simultaneously pushing it out. The disk slides out so you clean it.

So while not perfect, it''s still a pretty handy cap to have and I use it all the time. I would not hesitate to buy it again. But I sure wish Klean Kanteen would design another cap for the bottle that is both leakproof and easy to drink from.

This top fits perfectly on my wide-mouth insulated Klean Kanteen, making my once water-bottle into a travel mug! It makes sipping my water, coffee, and other beverages so much easier! I was getting tired of the twist-off tops and wanted something a bit more accessible. However, this top, unlike the twist-off ones that come with the Kanteens, leaks at the spout. It''s not surprising, I have never found a coffee top that is 100% leak-proof. So, if you''re just walking with your beverage in your hand and are not anticipating sloshing around your Kanteen, use this top. But if you are planning on hiking or walking, and need to put your Kanteen in a bag or somewhere it may get knocked over, use the twist-off top instead. Both are very valuable to have around, though.
