Eco Vessel Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle with Screw Cap

I bought a double-walled Eco Vessel about a year ago, but seldom used it as it failed to keep liquids hot under very cold conditions. HOWEVER, the new triple-wall unit is far better, and keeps boiling water hot for at least 4 hours in cold-to-cool conditions. I use the thermos in the winter, snowshoeing and hiking in the Rocky Mountains back-country of Colorado. Since I begin each hike well hydrated, I sometimes don''t access my water supply for a couple of hours. And, at that point, I need it both for hydration and for warming.

Why only 4 stars? I''m a very tough grader.

When I reported my poor review of the double-wall unit to Eco Vessel, an excellent customer service rep. (thank you Carol!) apologized for its performance and offered to send me one of their new, triple-wall units -free. I certainly couldn''t argue with that, and told her I''d give it a thorough test. The new unit arrived within a few days. What follows are my test results.

First, I prewarmed the unit with hot tap water, letting it sit for 5 minutes or so. This is important, as metal is an excellent heat conductor. Warming the metal up front slows initial heat loss. Then I filled the unit (24 oz.) with vigorously-boiling water from a tea kettle. Once in the vessel, the water temperature measured 200º F, ~12º being immediately lost through conduction into the inner wall.

I set the filled vessel outside in the shade. Ambient (air) temperature at test start: 26ºF. Vessel was placed on a low-heat-conductive surface (my door mat).

At hour 1, Contents: 178ºF. Ambient temp: 32º.

At hour 2, Contents: 163ºF, Ambient temp: 37ºF

At hour 3, Contents: 150ºF, Ambient temp: 41ºF.

At this point, I removed half the water to simulate drinking 12 oz.

At hour 4, Contents: 134ºF, Ambient temp: 45ºF.

134º is hot, but nicely drinkable (not so hot it must be sipped).

Conclusion: the triple-walled unit is a great improvement. And Eco Vessel''s customer service is exceptional. This, I believe, represents their attention to quality overall.

While no all metal unit can compete for heat-retention with glass-walled units, metal is immensely more robust. I have dropped water bottles many times, watching them bounce off rocks. Try that with glass.

One improvement I suggest: Make the steel tops knurled. They tend to slip while wearing gloves and, in very cold weather, one does not want to remove one''s gloves (usually heavy mittens in my case) to get a drink.

(#1 REVIEWER)I can''t tell you where the Berumuda triangle is that zaps up my water bottles...I use them all the time so I suppose it''s likely I leave them places and Ii know I''ve broken some or melted lids in the dishwasher but be that as it may, I am like the tester of water bottles because I''ve owned so many.

But I shouldn''t call this a water bottle. Because it''s steel, it keeps coffee hot for hours. Because it has a mesh screen at the top that pulls out in one second, you can also load it with crushed ice and a rum and diet coke and head to the BYOB party down the block and not ruin your lipstick or makeup with crushed ice coming atcha every time you take a sip.

But for me, I force myself to get my daily water intake in with it.

So here is why it''s different...

Unlike most, the lid stays attached. No rummaging through my drawer to find a matched lid anymore. Pop it off and the screw top hangs down by a rubber piece that also rotates so it''s never in the way.

It''s triple insulated. I literally get a cold or hot drink for hours depending upon what I put inside. It''s a thermos without the weight of a thermos.

It''s steel. No BPA leaching from my plastic

But my fave part is actually that little screen at under the lid that pulls out if you don''t want it but it naturally controls the flow of liquid. What I mean is, I prefer drinking from a water bottle so that a beverage, especially when I work out, isn''t splashing all over the place. But we have all read that sucking on the kind with the built in straw causes wrinkles anyway and you can''t really clean out those straw parts...but the other kind with just an open hole at the top can wind up with spilled coffee or bev down your shirt. This solved it all. The screen makes it go "glug glug glug" rather than pour so you get the absolute perfect amount of liquid. Even if you turn it upside down. Brilliant. But it also stops any coffee grinds, crushed ice, or anything else that you don''t need down your throat.

And with all the large openings it''s far easier to clean.

And heavy duty so it lasts, making it worth the price but...if I lose this one in my Twilight Zone water bottle vortex, I''m getting another. This is the best yet.

For you scientifically inclined I did controlled studies and did all the experiments in triplicate at room temp (69F) with two different electronic temp probes and reported the averages. Standard deviations were small.

Summarynot as advertised but works well better for cold liquids than hot. Hot liquids: 6 hours. Cold with no ice cubes:12 hours, cold with 4 oz ice cubes: 36 hours.

Ecovessel keeps liquids hot for 6 hours not 12. I poured 24 oz boiling water into the vessel. At 6 hours the temp was 151F which is hot. At 12 hours the temperate was 125%F. Hot for hot-tub but not for teas or soups.

Ecovessel is more effective at keeping liquids cold but only if you put in a certain amount of ice cubes. I put in 24 oz of cold water from a Sub-zero refrigerator set at 35F with no ice cubes, temp goes up to 45F in 12 hours. 20 oz of 35F water and 4 oz of ice cubes keeps the liquid cold (39F) for 36 hours but the ice cubes disappear. Ice cubes are important for keeping liquids cold.

Its with me from morning to night, every single day.

This is what other water bottles grow up wishing they could be.

The only bottle i''ve ever seen thats almost as good as this one was the thermos equivalent one.

People don''t realize they should be drinking a ton of water a day. about 6 of these bad boys.

This makes drinking water convenient and affordable. Drinking bottled water is not a reasonable answer.

Plastics leach!

AND water companies lie.

This has been perfect for my hubby due to the size, how much it holds. He really liked the curving in the bottle, it really gives a much more natural feeling to holding the bottle. The outside is also textured which offers a much more easier way to keep a hold of the bottle. No slipping from bottle sweat.
