While the filter itself is great, the bags Sawyer uses tend to develop leaks along the seams if squeezed very much. Light, simple and easy to use. Takes between 7-10 minutes to drain the 64oz bag and leaves an oz in the bag. Easy to string the bag up to run into the container of choice with no effort.

Since this is a hollowfiber filter it can not be allowed to freeze so if it is cold I keep it in my pocket and sleeping bag.

I switched to the Sawyer Squeeze from the Aquamira Frontier Pro, because the Squeeze is a more effective filter. The Squeeze has a slightly higher field weight than the Frontier Pro, but it is safer to use without additional chemical treatment than the Frontier Pro. The Squeeze''s guarantee is excellent, and the expected life of the filter is far longer than that of the Frontier Pro.

I tested the filter, at home, with both the 16 and 32oz bottles. I was wary of the strength of the bottles, due to the force being exerted on them and some previous bad experiences with Platypus bottles of a similar design (though my Evernew bottles have proven to be extremely durable), but both seemed solid.

I used the 16oz. squeeze bottle in conjunction with the filter for 6 months, approximately 10 separate backpacking trips, and 30-40 individual uses of the bottle. The 16oz. bottle showed no leaks at all and greatly increased my confidence in Sawyer''s design. For a trip to the high desert of Central Oregon, I decided to use the 32oz. bottle.

At the second use of the 32oz. bottle, it developed a small leak near the top seam. I was able to filter enough water for myself and my hiking partner, but the leak allowed dirty water to spray my clean bottle. At my next water stop, the bottle sprung a second leak on the opposite seam and the first hole doubled in size. Half of each fillup ended up in the dust, and I was unable to carry water in the bottle to the next water source.

After my trek, I emailed Sawyer about the defective bottle, and was ignored. A rep responded to my second email, politely telling me that Sawyer did not cover the water bottles, but only the filter. Even after explaining my experience with the system and the number of uses the filter had seen, I received this as a response:

"We find most pouches fail from customers trying to force water too fast through the filter or using a filter that needs cleaning. To help customer through the learning curve on their pouches, we are offering replacement pouches at a substantial discount on our web site."

Unfortunately, a cheap replacement is no help when a bottle breaks in the backcountry. The filter itself is excellent, but the system itself is flawed.

After using other "squeeze" filters, I found this to be the easiest by far. It doesn''t take much and good clean water is flowing. Several friends have built their own gravity filter systems with this. I love the versatility of filter with the ability to put it on a bottle or the supplies bags. I can use it on trail, in town or where ever and have good clean water as easy as fill and drink.

While hiking with a few friends in Dolly Sods, WV we took a rest stop near a creek. The water there is red in color with the many hemlocks and spruce in the area, and is known for clogging filters. I had the 16 oz Sawyer bag with me and filled it in the creek, added the filter, and filled 2 bottles while my friends waited. When I was done I had to say loudly "Hello, done now" as they couldn''t believe I''d filtered water that fast and easy, especially from this source. One even asked for a taste and was amazed at how good it was. This filter system works great!

Bought this item to use as a backpacker/hiker. Decided to field test it before taking it on an extended trip. Took the 1L bag with me and when it came time to use the item, it was a complete and utter failure. Made my 2 day trip miserable, had to boil all my water because the filter/bag failed.

I filled up my bag as stated at the creek, screwed on the filter, and turned the bag upside down, and before I could squeeze the thing, water comes running out of the seam at the top of the bag contaminating my water bottle. When I get home, I decide to test my other bags no problem with them. I must have a defective bag, right? So being a new product, I contact Sawyer directly they tell me it was probably my fault and there is no warranty on the bag. Obviously there must be some kind of communication breakdown, so I contact them again and reiterate, the bag was NEW, NEVER USED, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, and simply started leaking after I put water in it. There answer? That''s tough, "you can buy new bags at REI."

One of the worst customer service experiences I''ve had, hands down. So, I returned the entire purchase, and I would not buy another Sawyer product. This filter comes with a 1 million gallon guarantee, but after this experience I doubt they would ever actually back that guarantee, so if you choose to buy, just keep in mind its a one and done item. After they get your money, they could care less about their cheap product.
