Sawyer Complete Dual Bag Water Treatment System

Sawyer Complete 4-Liter Dual Bag Water Treatment SystemI bought 2 sawyer water filters. The first one was the kit for backpacking. The second was the emergency 5 gallon bucket kit. The more expensive backpacking kit worked great for the first season. Used it 4 trips with no issues. The following summer I took it out expecting the same performance but much to my surprise we got no water to pass through the filter. To be clear, I followed all of the instructions. I would backflush the filter when we returned from each trip and never let the filter freeze.

Since we planned a 2 night trip we decided to cut it short to one night because we didn''t want to have to boil all our water for the next 3 days. I tell you drinking hot water on a hot day really isn''t refreshing when you are thirsty.

I have not used the emergency filter yet. It looks the same as the backpacking filter other than different fittings on the end of the filter. I will/can not trust sawyer to be my only filter source. It now has 2 other backups, one chemical and the other a pump filter. Before my failure I felt a gallon of bleach was good back-up, now I realize how important it is to be able to have clean drinking water and sawyer is not reliable in my opinion.

I emailed sawyer when we returned from our trip after the failure and all sawyer would tell me was to soak it in vinegar to clean out possible calcium deposits. This did not work and from then on they would not respond to me after sending at least 5 more emails.

When it works it works great, but if it fails you could lose up to $125.00 as I did. Just want others to be aware is all. I understand products fail, but customer service should never fail.

I have only had the chance to use this on one backcountry trip. 5 days with 4 people. Never ran out of water and was super simple to use. Couple of things that seem to maximize the experience: Try to use the cleanest water possible to minimize backflushing. Hang the bags with maximum vertical difference possible between them, this gives the best pressure on filter. Don''t hang in the sun so your water stays cool.

Other than those tips just enjoy clean fresh water!

I have put this system through the trenches, and it keeps holding up.

I keep the clean bag inside of laptop bag and use it as type of hydration system for hiking.

It is great for any type of water purification, I use it on city water, and well water.

When it gets slow I just reverse the filter push some water through to backflush it and then set it up normal.

The best thing is you just take the dirty bag down to the creek, dunk the whole bag into the water it fills up in seconds pull it out, cap it, throw it in your bag or just carry it back to the camp site and hang it up.

You want to make sure you don''t let the filter get frozen or really hot tho. I usually keep it in my bag that I take around with me everywhere vs leaving it in the car.

The only real downside is that it is not very compact, even empty, the bags, filter, hozes take up a little space, but for something up to 4 liters and the reversable filter with no pumping I am willing to take up some space.
