Reliance Products Aqua-Tainer 4 Gallon Rigid Water Container

I do not have this product, but was looking for this information and found it on another website, so I thought I''d share it here!

Reliance Aqua-Tainer dimensions are as follows:

4 gallon 11 in. long x 11 in. wide x 10 5/8 in. high

7 gallon 12 in. Long X 11 1/2 in. Wide X 16 in. High

I used this for a several road trips in the back of the car for camping. The first 2-3 trips it held up OK. Last time we went offroading the vibrations were a little more and it started leaking around the cap / spigot area. Leaking is pretty serious when the unit is standing up (i.e. when the spigot is positioned to be ready for use). It is possible to keep it lying as shown on the product photos here so water does not leak, but that defeats the purpose of setting it up as a portable camping water faucet.

Not recommended for travel or camping. May be OK for use within the home.

The air vent cap has apparently been redesigned, since it is billed as "new and improved," but it''s not as good as it should be. The weak link is the plastic tether that is meant to prevent loss of the cap. That tether arrived already snapped on the first one of these I bought. Amazon sent me a second, and it had the exact same problem. The air vent itself was also a bit crooked on both samples. But I ended up keeping the second one because I decided that the tether is not essential. You can loosen the cap a half turn to let air in and the cap will still stay securely on the threads. (This might not be acceptable depending on how careful your users will be and how high the stakes are for your application--I''m just using this for car camping.) It is also possible to buy a replacement spigot and vent cap for this. Presumably if you did that, you could get one with an unbroken tether, since the piece would not be under as much stress if it were not actually in use, though I still wonder how long it would stay intact. A couple of other things to know: I found that the caps do seal okay, with no leaks, and this is true for the spigot side whether it''s in storage or active position. I was also able to position the spigot straight down and still had no leaks (some other reviews mention the need to settle for a cockeyed spigot). I accomplished this by just snugging the spigot into the cap and then going one full turn more. It feels like you are cranking pretty hard when you do this, but I don''t see any signs of undue stress. It is admittedly a little fiddly to get everything set so that you are not leaking, but now that I''ve fiddled at home and know this thing''s quirks I don''t foresee any problems in the field. When the reversible spigot is in storage position, its inside is exposed to the elements through the hole in the cap, but I still like having the spigot out of harm''s way. You can put a sandwich bag over the hole in the cap and secure it with a rubber band if you are concerned. (By the way, when it comes new, there is an adhesive sticker over this hole to keep out dirt, but you have to remove that sticker the first time you install the spigot.) There are volume markings on the sides (gallons on one side and liters on the other), but it''s not that easy to see the water inside, depending on the lighting. If you shine a flashlight at the wall of the tank on one side and look at the other, then the system works perfectly. The last 3/4 of a gallon or so won''t come out through the spigot without tipping the container. The plastic is not quite as rigid as I thought it would be, but it seems fairly durable. I do not notice any unpleasant taste in the water at all after four days in the tank at room temperature. I didn''t do anything special when I got it to clean it--just gave it a rinse with plain water. It is PBA free. All that I''ve said is based on having this in the house for four days, with a full 4 gallons in it, leaving it mainly on a counter top, positioned for use--I haven''t actually taken it on a trip yet. So apart from the tether for the vent cap--and actually even taking that into consideration--this was the best container I could find of its type. I''d still like to see Reliance try again with that vent cap, but this seems like a good choice, at least for family car camping.

I ordered 3 of these and 2 of them leaked the very first time I tested them. They both leaked from the main cap/spigot. I tried making them tighter, making them looser. It didn''t matter. Only 1 out of 3 was leak-free. I hate using disposable plastic water jugs for our camping trips and I really wanted to like these, but 2 out of 3 failing means I will never try them again.

I love this small container. The larger ones are too heavy to carry around for very long. This is a good size for me. I use it for washing off my feet and my wetsuit after surfing.
