The Sawyer Point Zero Two takes the water filtering process up a notch to clear out viruses. I wanted a filter for emergencies. I''m not a "Survivalist" (at least not yet), but I thought it would be sensible to have contingencies just in case. One can go a long time without food but only days without water.

We have rain barrels and other sources of available non-pipe waterjust need to filter it. This product is very basic: drill a hole in a bucket(not one used for chemicals) attach the hose ~1.5" from bottom, hang it up, and let gravity do the work. A 3'' hose and a 5 gallon bucket produces 87 gallons(327L)/day. If the water is turbid, muddy, lots of particulates, one can screen it through a T-shirt, use a shorter hose or allow it to settle. It''s very simple to backwashjust attach the syringe and flush with clean water. They recommend backwashing every 1000 gallons if fairly clear; if turbid every 10 gallons.

It states it removes 99.9999% bacteria/ protozoan(e.g. Cryptosporidium) and 99.9997% viruses including Hepatitis A & E, Poliovirus, Norwalk, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Coxsackie, Echo, Reo, Astro, Corona(SARS).

OK great. Do I need all that, living here in North American not near any piles of human or animal waste? No, it''s overkill, but my wife freaks out about any chance of drinking contaminated H2O.

It''s a neat and simple unit. I''ve had no problems. Sawyer boasts it will last a million gallons. And one doesn''t need a cataclysm, take it camping. Just remember, it doesn''t purify chemicals out.

I have used a Sawyer .1 micron filter with bucket adapter for the last few months. Unlike the .02 filter advertised here the .1 is designed to filter out 99.9% of bacteria but not viruses. I have been using it to filter lake water as well as shallow well water. I have used both for drinking water as it has done an excellent job with both. The lake water does tend to clog up the filter more quickly but it can be easily and quickly cleaned by back washing it with clean water with the syringe provided. I was able to purchase the .1 filtering kit on ebay quite reasonably for $46. For my purposes the system has worked great and I would recommend it. It should be noted that the .1 I use will filter faster as .1 is fives times larger than .02.

All the Sawyer filters are fantastic. This one is significantly bulkier than the Squeeze or the other .1 micron filters. It also filters more slowly, but I''m really cautious about water sources I''m not sure of, and this gives me extra peace of mind.

They shipped on a day when it was below freezing, and the filters sat outside over night. I was concerned they''d need to be sent back, as the web site warns that the filters may not work after being frozen. I called customer service and their rep said that only matters once they''ve had water through them. Their customer service was quick and friendly. I''m not looking anywhere else for water filters ever again.

My Pastor and his team have taken these filter/purifyers with them on mission trips to several South American countires including Haiti after there terrible disaster a few years ago. It is really helpful in emergency situations like that. We even did a "test" in our Sunday Service where we retrieved water from a retention pond, then filtered it out and my husband drank it! He said it was great! I can''t write a technical review, but from what I''ve seen and tasted, this is a great product. light weight, easy to travel/hike with. We have two of them!!

I live in LA, California and the water is ok, but I wanted to see what a good water filter can do. I pre-filtered the water with a Brita pitcher and then ran it thru a 5 gal bucket with the Point Zero filter using a food grade 5 gallon bucket that cost $4 at Lowe''s,and I got one of those gamma lids that spins on the 5 Gal container at Home Depot. The results were eye popping amazing. The water after stage one using the Brita was neutral tasting. After running the Brita water through stage two of the Point Zero Two purifier, the results were really amazing. The water taste sweet. others who try it say the same. I empty the 5 gallon main supply container into one of those 2.5 gallon BPA free water container from Walmart that cost about $9. Then into the Camelback .8L with the bite value removed and a small stray in its place. I know it is a bit of an overkill, but this is about the best tasting water I remember ever drinking. Very surprised it taste so great. This water deserves the gold metal. Try this experiment if you want the best tasting water you will ever drink. My next step is to kick back and enjoy.
