Previously we had tried the Klean Kanteen with the sports cap but water poured out if it tipped over. After that our stand-by has been the Beaba sippy cup (no valve), which I was very happy with but never let my daughter have without a Sippy Grip (strap) when seated up high because the cap only snapped on. Even though it was on REALLY tight, the cap was liable to pop off if dropped from height. While on the floor, my daughter loves to shake the Beaba sippy and make a water slide. I like that it''s easy to get water out of because it doesn''t have a valve the 3 holes in the spout keep it from pouring out as badly as the Klean Kanteen sports cap.
Now we use the Klean Kanteen with the new spout as our primary sippy cup and keep it within her reach so she can have it whenever she wants. The cap doesn''t touch the floor if the sippy rolls away, nor does it unleash water if shaken or tipped. We do find occasional small puddles if it has been hanging upside down from the Sippy Grip for a while. As Kleen Kanteen say on their site it is spill-proof but not leak-proof, so I accept that a little water is going to escape once in a while, being that a small uncoordinated human is in control of it, and that a little water is not going to kill anyone or ruin anything. The cap screws tightly into the Klean Kanteen and will fit any standard Klean Kanteen size. It holds the water in great under normal use and I feel comfortable leaving my daughter with it knowing she can''t pop the top off or turn the floor into a slick.
Because it has a valve, she does have to suck a bit to get water out I''ve tried and it''s very easy. She is a breastfed baby and never used bottles so I''m happy that her latch has not been affected by introducing this sippy style. The suck action on this spout seems pretty natural to her, actually.
The cap is polypropelene (#5) which is a safe, BPA-free, phthalate-free, lead-free plastic which is not known to leach chemicals as good as you can get for plastic. Its the same material as the other Klean Kanteen caps. The dust cover is also polypropelene, unlike what the Amazon description says. The valve is silicone and removable the whole cap is therefore easy to wash and everything can be put in the dishwasher. It fits in our cup holders in the car, which is a nice perk because most sippy''s have funky, non-standard shapes or sizes. It also has a lifetime warranty.
The downsides? The only one I can see so far is that Little One likes to bite down on the spout and has left a few teethmarks. They are superficial indentations and she hasn''t managed to scrape away any of the plastic.
I''ll definitely be buying more of these.
