Zefal Gizmo Bicycle Bottle Cage Mounting Bracket (Large)

I bought this and the Elite VIP cage mount to compare on my vintage folding bike. Having ridden both, I stuck with the Elite; it holds tighter. If you''re in the market you won''t have to worry about sizing with the VIP either. The Gizmo would probably work just as well if you put something underneath the clamp for added friction. And just so you know they come two to a package.

The Zefal Gizmo is an esthetic and non-corrosive way to replace the old corroded cage clamps on my vintage 531 steel steed or any bike without brazed-on bottle mounts.

First, make sure you''ve purchased the correct size/diameter. I purchased a Medium for 1 to 1 1/8" tube. Cages with 2mm thin metal bases (where the hex bolts attach) like Blackburn Competition or Generic/Delta works well but ONE of the large 2 mm semi-circular TABS on the top of EACH plastic base needs to be cut off so the top of the cage base is about even with the top of the remaining tabs and the included hex bolts can then reach and engage the nut threads more completely and without overextending on to the frame.

To cut off the tabs: Scribe a line near the base of the tabs with hobby knife then cut the tabs with a hobby razor saw; or just grind it down with a rotary tool. Main point is to remove the tab/tabs that''s blocking the cage base and preventing the hex bolt from reaching the nut at the bottom for thicker cage bases. The bottom nut is secured in the slot formed by the ends of the band.

For cages with bases thicker than 2mm all four tabs may need to be cut out and may require a longer hex bolt. The four tabs on top of the plastic base are there for a reason (cover the sides of the cage base) but the instructions is just a simple picture without showing how to adapt to different thickness of cage bases.

Zefal could have designed this Gizmo better with included adapters to fit any cage base without having buyers to do the extra modifications. Once fitted and properly tightened on the bike frame, the Gizmo holds the cage snugly and securely and doesn''t seem to be affected by minor road bumps.

This a great mount. It is a little difficult to attach but once on it fits nice and secure. It is easily adjustable and looks great.

I''ve read in a couple reviews that some manual adjustment with a roto-tool is needed to make these fit. Well nuts to that. I suppose if I were going to get the toolkit out, I ought to just braze some mounts onto the bike myself.

Anyway, these don''t fit any of the cages that I own, at least not without taking a chunk out of the mount, the cage or both. Even if I were so inclined to do that, these things look so goofy with their 1-in standoffs, I couldn''t see mounting this to a bike with a straight face.

I cannot get the included bolts to mount even the thinnest water bottle cage. Maybe there is some specially-designed cage it is suitable for? If so, it sure would be nice to have instructions to that effect.
