Reliance Products 5 Gallon Water Container

Reliance Products 5 Gallon Water ContainerI like this company [reliance] they put out some pretty decent products. That is why I am surprised that they allowed this to reach market. I am returning the three water containers that i purchased and heres why;

(1) The plastic is so thin, that when filled 3/4 of the way full with water, it appears to start to stretch the plastic. That means that this container could not be

used to transport water when full. It probably would not make it through one trip.

(2) When filled with water the spigot leaks. No matter what configuration I put the handle into, (i.e., spigot inside, spigot outside, tightening spigot, tightening cap) it leaked. When I set the container onto a chair, so that the cap was not touching the floor, a small steady drip continued to leak out of the cap. This is very bad. In a survival situation, every drop of water is precious.

(3) If water leaks out, then the container is not sealed. Your stored water can become contaminated.

This is the first "I hate it" rating for any of the products I have purchased on Amazon. I would not rely on this product at all and have no confidence in its ability to store, transport, or even dispense water. For this reason I am sending it back and will spend a little more money on something more sturdy.

This reminded me of the time tested rule: Always test a product before you need to use it especially if it is going to be used in an emergency!!!!

February 4, 2010: I bought one to try it out and compare it to another product from another company (coleman). I''ll give it a try and see what happens.

It will keep me supplied with water.

Update: I can''t recommend this product to anyone. It is way too flimsy. I can''t think of anything to use it for now. Very poor quality product. Highly NOT recommended.

UPDATE: absolutely terrible the valve twisted right off but it was never hit or misused. the container just SPLIT right open.

Buy Reliance Products 5 Gallon Water Container Now

I ordered these for 2 reasons:

1We are going on a camping trip this summer and I have used water containers like this in the past to help with washing (dishes and hands) and they always work great. We have 3 kids and dirty hands while camping is a givin, These seem to be very sturdy and well made I have used thicker walled containers in the past but as long as you are not playing rugby with these they seem like they will last for years, I like the ability to hide the spigot inside the cap for easier transportation. No strong plastic odor and the water tastes like water not plastic or chemicals. Overall a great product.

The other reason reason I am buying these is that they offer a replacement cap kit here on Amazon in case you loose or break one.

Reliance Products Replacement Spigot Assembly for Reliance Water Containers

UPDATE 11-6-2010 I wanted to add to my review after our camping trip this June 2010. We ended up with 5 of the reliance 5 gallon containers all working perfectly and are now in storage until our next trip. At the end of our trip one container fell out of the van and landed on the spigot cap, this container started to leak from the spigot valve area the same way some other reviewers mentioned a slow steady stream from the valve not the cap, we tried everything to fix this leak, tighten the cap, tighten the spigot nothing worked so we ordered a replacement cap kit and the leak went away again a perfectly working water container. We also found out our local sporting goods store sells the Reliance containers and cap kits.

Could be made with thicker plastic which make it more sturdy.

If you were going to use this in a emegency you would be carrying this around alot and it could break.

This is a pretty good water container. The spout is reversible and when in use turns much easier than the previous model. My one complaint is that the housing of the container is kind of flimsy, not solid like some of their other models.
