Stanley Nineteen13 One Handed H20 Bottle

Stanley Nineteen13 One Handed H20 BottleUsed this probably 4-5 days a week for the last five months. I drive around for work, so it would go from kitchen to car and back no heavy abuse, no clipping it to bags and hiking or biking. It started off great, with a totally waterproof seal. After about four months, it started to leak if tipped. Not from the threads where it screws on, but from the waterproof valve at the top. Then last week, I clipped it to the front strap of my child carrier backpack for a light hike, and the rubber ring snapped off. That was the first time i had clipped it to anything. They make that from a separate piece that is glued onto the harder plastic lid, so it has a natural weak point. Camel bak bottles have a smarter, one-piece design in my opinion. This claims to have a lifetime warranty. I have contacted the company and will update with results.

To summarize:

PROS

Great visual design

BUILT brand neoprene sleeves fit perfectly on it, so ice water stays cold

When new, the one hand design was convenient and truly leakproof

Fits in small car cupholders (Mazda 3 for me) even with the BUILT sleeve on

CONS

Stainless steel variety heats up quickly, so in a car, the sun can warm your water pretty fast. Not a deal breaker for me but you may want to consider a vacuum bottle if it is for you

Didn''t hold up to regular light use for that I would not buy again and can''t recommend this at this point.

Hopefully I''ll be pleasantly surprised with their customer service, and if they replace it I''ll update my review.

UPDATE: I emailed them on Saturday 11/26. I received an email back on Tuesday suggesting I call. I got through quickly, and the customer service rep told me they were sending me a new cap that should arrive in 2 weeks. One star added back for how easy that was no sending my old one in and waiting.

UPDATE: The new cap arrived via Fedex on 12/5. This one works just as the other one did when new. I''m adding a star for great service, although I''m not all that optimistic that this one will last longer than 6 months.

I''ve used this bottle for over one year now on numerous day hikes and weekly car trips (It''s a little too heavy for my style of backpacking). It has held up just fine despite all the plastic parts and does not leak. Because the rubber loop does not appear to be very strong, I''ve never tested it by carrying it by the loop.

I like the durability and the wide mouth Its easy to fill it with ice cubes on a hot day and easy to clean inside the steel bottle. What I don''t like is the inability to clean the top. I use it to carry water, ice tea, and occasionally tea with lemonade mix. Although I give it a good rinse at the end of each day, after a year there is noticeable grunge building up on the valve at the mouthpiece, but the way it is constructed makes routine cleaning with a brush or cloth near impossible. I have looked hard, but can''t find a way to disassemble it for cleaning.

I would give it more stars, but the inability to clean the parts that come in contact with the stuff you are ingesting is a big negative for me.

I''ve posted some pictures showing this bottle in close-up. I really like how this bottle looks and feels.

The fill opening is nice and large, so I can fill this very quickly, even using water bubblers.

When I press the button to open the top for drinking the water comes out at a regular rate whatever the bottle angle is. I can drink while moving about without getting water all over my shirt.

I haven''t had it long enough to judge how it holds up overall. I''ll try to do this after a few months.

Update: My bottle started leaking from the push button area. Sometimes it''s only a drop, but it can be a fast series of drops. I called Stanley and they''re going to send me a replacement cap. I''m hoping that will fix the problem.

Update, February 2012. The replacement cap fixed the problem and I''ve used this bottle daily ever since. I can throw it in the bottom of a bag without worrying about soaking other things. And I still love the way the water comes out slowly enough that I''ve never gotten a huge mouthful, or had my shirt soaked by a big gush of water.

I have 5 of these and after 6 months one of the tops malfunctioned and started to leak. It ruined a book in the bag. I emailed the company and they told me that the top was not covered under warranty. Funny, what is covered under your lifetime warranty...the solid steel bottle? Your bottle leaks.. all I wanted was a new top. I was told they were no longer sold and that basically I was out of luck. Warning, poor manufacturing and even worse customer service.

The body of the canteen is robust and fits a bottle brush just fine. Interior same as exterior. Recieved mine with a non operational lid. A bunch of little parts comprise the mechanics of the sealing portion of the lid. Disappointed in the recieved item becasue it was non functional and that there were so many pieces in the lid to keep it from leaking, springs, tabs, et al. Could have been made simpler and probably fixeable by a do it yourselfer IF there werent so much little stuff going on in the lid.
