Filter rate is okay, medium drip rate but better than most mini pump filters.
What makes this really cool is the size and versatility.
The same filter can be hooked up multiple ways.
Put a straw on both ends and drink from a stream.
Connect it mid-line to a Camelback or between two bags and have a gravity filter.
(Make the top bag a Shower bag and have a huge filter that can provide water for the whole camp.)
Use the ''flush'' adapter to purify water directly from the tap when traveling overseas!
Drill a hole in a 5 gal bucket (Sawyer sells the Kit) and make a bucket/ gravity filter. (Sawyer has a program in Africa using this system providing clean water for whole villages!)
I have a Sawyer Filter with the quick releases and swap it back and forth between 3 backpacks, faucet filter my (creek pumped) water, as an emergency filter using the bucket system. In my ultra-light day pack I have a small platypus bag with the Sawyer inline filtering, and some emergency supplies. On day hikes I just stop and fill from whatever creek or puddle and keep moving.
ONE filter for day hikes, long hikes, thru hikes, group expedition and disaster/ earthquakes...This filter is a life saver. It worked great on our most recent backpacking trip, where water was scarce. I am very pleased with this product. I used it in-line with Cyclone hydration bladders from a local Wal-mart, and it performed very well. We enjoyed clean water, from sources that were less than optimum. It is WAY BETTER than boiling, or using chemicals for purifying.
If anyone wants to help people in Pakistan, or other places experiencing clean water issues, this would be a great product to help.

My friend used one of these to make a gravity filter...he connected it with tubing to a waterproof bag. I was high up in the mountains, and just filled the bag up with stream water and it filtered great. Didn''t get sick. Water tasted nice and clean. I was so stoked on it, I''m going to buy one for myself!!!Read Best Reviews of Sawyer SP121 Just Drink Inline Water Filter Here
I''ve been backpacking for almost three decades now and used many popular purification systems including the MSR WaterWorks, First Need, iodine tablets, chlorine tablets, and the Steri-pen. When I installed the Sawyer inline filter I was a bit concerned about how difficult it would make drinking from my camelbak and initially it seemed like my fears were realized. However, after a stream-side fill up on the trail I realized that the hose was kinked and that was what was causing the resistance, not the filter. It was an easy fix and that''s when the real appreciation started. I found myself carrying less water since I was traveling in country with lots of streams. I could open my camelbak, scoop in a quart with my cooking pot, close it back up and be on the trail. No pumping, no waiting for chemicals to kick in, and no chemical taste. When I stopped for the night and needed water to cook with I just removed the bladder from my pack, put it in a tree, removed the bite valved and in under 90 seconds had a pan full of water. While I''ve only used this filter on one three day trip, the light weight, convenience, and functionality have me convinced I''ve been doing it wrong for years. The Sawyer inline filter is the way forward. I simply can''t see a downside to it.Not really sure what to say about this product other than it seems to work fine in certain settings. I still need to test this out when I go camping and find out all the methods that can be used with this product (with rivers, or the use of a camping shower bag and gravity with the sun hitting down on it etc). I do notice a difference in the taste of water, and it comes out way cleaner tasting than city water of course. I do wish it filtered out viruses, but that filter cost an additional $40 dollars, you can always boil water which I recommend any ways when it comes to emergencies. I have done research on water filters and this one is in the top picks, and it is being used in parts of Africa, so I would say that you can count on this unit. I give this unit a 5 star because I am basing it on its previous reviews, and some of my experience with it.
