Soda Stream Tonic 16.9 fl oz bottle

Soda Stream Tonic 16.9 fl oz bottleI specifically bought my Soda Stream in the hopes that I could make my own tonic water. I don''t drink much soda pop, but do enjoy a gin and tonic. Tonic at the store is surprisingly expensive, and I always realize I''m out at the least convenient times (often while pouring the gin). I have long wished I could make my own tonic, but quinine isn''t easy to get a hold of...

When I saw the Soda Stream product initially, I thought, "that would be nice for making tonic water," but the thought was followed by the concern that if they had tonic, it would be inauthentic (quinine might not be tasty, but it''s past of the tonic. You can''t make a proper gin & tonic with sparkling water!)

So, once I was able to confirm 1) that tonic was an option from Soda Stream, and 2) it contained quinine, I was pretty excited and bought the Soda Stream at my local store. I immediately ordered the tonic mixer from Amazon (since the samples included with the machine didn''t include tonic).

I admit it, I was worried about the quinine and spend any time thinking about the other ingredients.

When it arrived, I set to work drinking g&ts. ;-) Unfortunately, after making several batches of tonic, I gave up. All attempts resulted in passable tonic water, but they all had a strange, sweet tinge (which, rereading the ingredients,I assume is caused by Splenda). I found the flavor distracting, and threw out the rest of the mix (And returned the machine.)

The Soda Stream system is easy to use, and I didn''t have any trouble whipping up batches of tonic (or soda) but I just couldn''t embrace the sweetness that came through, even when I decreased the amount of concentrate added to the water. If you are used to the taste of Splenda, it may not bother you but I don''t like it. If they expand their selections someday, so Splenda-less versions are available, I may give them another try.

This product, even though not ''diet,'' contains sucralose and acesulfame -but one has to go to the product ingredients to find this, because the general information says nothing about it that I could find. I contacted the company to ask about syrups that don''t contain Sucralose, because these ingredients give me a headache, and they replied (with very little sympathy) that they use it in all their syrup products. Since these ingredients taste weird and give many people a splitting headache, the company should clearly indicate in the product literature that the regular drinks contain ''diet'' sweeteners.

They advertise that they contain ''no aspartame in diet flavors'' and boldly state ''no high fructose corn syrup'', but the regular flavors contain sucralose artificial sweetners making it taste awful. No disclaimer on the front of the bottle. How can they legally NOT call it DIET if it has artificial sweetners? Anyway, unless you like and can drink diet drinks you will not like ''regular'' flavors either.

I have tried a number of Soda Stream flavors, and most of them are totally foul in my opinion (with their Ginger Ale & Root Beer being reasonably passable). In terms of the Tonic Water, I couldn''t stand the diet version, but I found the regular version to be fairly good, although it is a little on the weak tasting side of things. I just compensated by adding a bit more to the measuring cap. I use it for Vodka Tonics and I actually give it a thumbs up (and my wife likes it as well).

Soda Stream could help those of us who are getting older with weaker eyes, and that would be to make the slightly raised line in the measuring caps more prominent. The first use is generally OK, but once you use the cap and the inner surfaces get coated with the syrup, the line essentially disappears when you make up a back-to-back second batch.

Tastes all metallic and chemically. Most of the rest of the Soda Stream flavors are fine, but this one''s very off.
