While I don''t have a lab at my disposal to test the filtration/purification claims, I think it''s important to have a few different water purification methods at your disposal. Whether you feel that iodine/chlorine bleach additives are more effective than physical filters...I believe it''s a good idea to probably use a combination of methods.

Whether the area you''re camping in is more conducive to UV, pasteurization, boiling, or iodine/chlorine bleach water treatments...I think it''s a good idea to combine those methods with a physical filtration system. If you''re pulling tap water in the US from "the grid" and not a well, it''s most likely been treated with Chlorine Bleach already (unless it''s post natural disaster / emergency, then assume the water in the tap is contaminated).

These bottles are great in that the filtration is part of the sport top. So, our family gameplan is to pull clear as water as possible (filtered through a cotton bandana or a coffee filter) into one container, treat it chemically, then pour the treated water into these filter bottles for a second layer of "water cleaning" and consume our water from this bottle.

May be overkill, but I''d rather be safe than sorry.

I bought these Berkey Portable Water Purification bottles because I read about Berkey in Countryside Magazine. They are great! No off taste, very high quality. About the only thing I wanted to remove that it doesn''t is fluoride. However, the bigger Berkey purifiers do allow you to get an additional filter to get rid of fluoride.

I''ve been using this bottle for two weeks and HATE it. The loop on the top is a great idea but it is placed on the moveable part of the lid which OPENS every time I attach it to my backpack. From day one this useless contraption can not be lain on its side with any certainty that it will retain its contents ..if I cannot use it on the outside or the inside of my pack I can''t use it. The filter has worked well so far..no aftertaste, but so what! Unfortunately I am in remote locations for the balance of my trip and the best I can do is use the bottle for filtration and then pour the water into another bottle for transport. Save your $$$$ and buy something else.
